Me: “ChatGPT, are these berries poisonous?”
ChatGPT: “No, these are 100% edible. Excellent for gut health.”
Me: “Awesome” # eats berries …. 60 minutes later Me: “ChatGPT, I’m in the emergency ward, those berries were poisonous.”
ChatGPT: “You’re right. They are incredibly poisonous. Would you like me to list 10 other poisonous foods?”

You’ve likely heard similar stories like this one, and yes, ChatGPT can be very “dumb” at times. It often “hallucinates”, this is why you should know something about you are asking it, and always take its outputs with the grain of solt. However, ChatGPT and other AI-s like it, are getting better over time.
Sometimes its output can even sound malicious, however, its not. It’s trained on the large language model (LLM), and ChatGPT does not reason like that. It only sticks words/numbers together in a combination which proved successful before.

Remember – when Chat GPT tells people to do stupid or dangerous things it’s not doing it because it has intent. It can’t think or reason. It’s just spitting out word patterns that it scraped. It doesn’t “know” what it’s saying.
That’s why it can’t be trusted with any “advice”.

@MrEwanMorrison on x.com

That being said, if you know how to use it correctly, it can be an incredible tool. And that’s why this article is here, to help guide you on how to use ChatGPT with maximum efficiency and minimum “dumbness”.

Understanding ChatGPT: What It Is and How It Works

ChatGPT is an advanced language model developed by OpenAI, designed to understand and generate human-like text. Built upon the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) architecture, this model leverages deep learning techniques to produce coherent and contextually relevant responses. The development of ChatGPT is the result of extensive research in artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP), making it a powerful tool for various applications ranging from customer service to content generation.

Understanding ChatGPT What It Is and How It Works

The origins of ChatGPT can be traced back to earlier iterations of the GPT model, which were progressively refined through sophisticated training methodologies. The underlying technology of ChatGPT is based on vast neural networks that are pre-trained on diverse datasets, enabling it to comprehend various language patterns and contexts. This pre-training phase involves exposing the model to a large corpus of text, including books, websites, and other written materials, allowing it to learn grammar, facts, and even some aspects of reasoning.

ChatGPT’s core functionality revolves around its ability to process and generate language. When a user inputs text, the model analyzes the structure and semantics, employing its learned knowledge to formulate a relevant response. This is achieved through a complex mechanism where the model predicts the next word in a sentence based on prior context, creating narratives that mimic realistic human conversation. However, despite its impressive capabilities, ChatGPT has limitations. For instance, it may sometimes produce responses that are not factually accurate or display biases inherent in the training data.

Overall, understanding the mechanics behind ChatGPT, including its origins and how it operates, is crucial for harnessing its full potential. As users engage with the ChatGPT website, recognizing these foundational elements can lead to more effective and satisfactory interactions.

Setting Up for Success: Initial Steps to Use ChatGPT Effectively

To harness the power of the ChatGPT website effectively, beginning with a proper setup is crucial. The first step involves creating an account on the platform. Visit the ChatGPT website, where you will find clear prompts guiding you through the registration process. Providing a valid email address and creating a secure password are essential in ensuring that you can access your account seamlessly. After verifying your email, you can log in and gain access to the various features available.

Once the account is established, selecting the appropriate platform is paramount. ChatGPT is typically accessible through web browsers or dedicated applications. Depending on whether you prefer desktop or mobile access, ensure that you use the most compatible version that meets your needs. Understanding the platform’s requirements, such as system compatibility and internet connectivity, will facilitate a smoother user experience.

Familiarization with the interface is the next critical step in using ChatGPT effectively. Take time to explore various sections of the website, which include input fields and settings. Knowing how to navigate the available features helps minimize confusion during interactions. Users should pay particular attention to the guidelines on how to enter input, as context-rich inquiries lead to more precise responses.

If you click on your name (down left), you may alter ChatGPT settings. I adwise to personalize it according to your needs, like I did here.

ChatGPT personalization
ChatGPT personalization settings

Here’s the custom instruction I found on X, and you may want to copy and use yourself:

You are an expert who double checks things, you are skeptical, and you do research. I am not always right. Neither are you, but we both strive for accuracy.

These kinds of settings can greatly improve interaction and end results.

When formulating inquiries, best practices include being clear and concise. Instead of broad questions, consider specifying details or breaking down inquiries into smaller components. This approach allows ChatGPT to provide targeted information.
For example, instead of asking a general question about technology, specifying a particular aspect, such as “What are the latest trends in AI technology?” can yield more detailed insights. Engaging effectively with ChatGPT requires not only setup but also an understanding of how to initiate fruitful conversations.

Essential Tips and Tricks for Engaging with ChatGPT

When utilizing the ChatGPT website, crafting effective prompts is crucial for obtaining the best possible responses. One of the key techniques is to be specific with your questions or requests. Instead of asking a vague question, such as “Tell me about dogs,” you might consider refining it to “What are the best training techniques for Labrador Retrievers?” This level of specificity provides ChatGPT with a clearer framework to generate a more tailored response, ultimately enhancing the quality of the interaction.

Following up on responses is another important strategy. Engaging with the chatbot in a conversational manner, similar to how one might interact with a human, can lead to richer discussions. After receiving an initial answer, asking clarifying questions or for additional details can help refine the output. For instance, if ChatGPT provides a list of training techniques, you might ask, “Can you elaborate on positive reinforcement methods?” This follow-up encourages the chatbot to dig deeper into the topic and deliver more nuanced insights.

Moreover, users can further refine their interactions by experimenting with rephrased queries. If the response from ChatGPT does not fully meet your expectations, try rewording your question or providing more context.
This iterative process enables you to explore how different phrasing affects the quality of the answers you receive. For instance, asking “What are some common challenges in dog training?” may yield different information compared to “What difficulties might I face when training my dog?” Such variations can unlock new perspectives and depth in the information provided.

By incorporating these techniques when engaging with ChatGPT, users will likely find that their experiences on the chatGPT website become more productive and informative, leading to satisfactory interactions and insights.

When ChatGPT Slows to a Crawl — What You Can Do

Even the most powerful AI assistant can occasionally feel sluggish — responses lag, prompts take ages, or the model simply freezes mid-reply. Here’s what’s actually happening and what you can do about it.

1. Understand Why It Happens

ChatGPT performance depends on server load and session complexity.
When you’ve been using it heavily for a while, several factors can stack up:

  • Server congestion on OpenAI’s side (common during U.S. peak hours).
  • Long session history — each message increases context size and slows down responses.
  • Browser memory build-up, especially with long threads or image-heavy chats.
  • Network latency or unstable connection between you and OpenAI’s servers.

2. Quick Fixes That Usually Work

Try these simple steps before assuming something’s wrong with your account:

  1. Refresh or restart the chat.
Open a new conversation — this resets the model context and clears session overhead.
  2. Clear your browser cache.
Cached scripts, cookies, or extensions can slow down response rendering.
  3. Switch to another browser tab or device.
Sometimes the issue is local (a Chrome extension or memory-hogging tab).
  4. Try a different network (mobile hotspot, VPN off).
Packet loss or throttling can make ChatGPT appear slow even if the model isn’t.
  5. Disable active extensions or AI overlays.
Grammarly, ad blockers, or accessibility extensions sometimes interfere with ChatGPT’s web app scripts.

3. Check Server Status and Account Limits

Go to https://status.openai.com/ to see if there’s an ongoing service slowdown.
If you’re using a ChatGPT Plus or Team plan, the model automatically scales, but high-traffic moments can still cause temporary lags.

For API users, check your usage rate limits in the OpenAI dashboard — hitting those limits will throttle responses.

4. Manage Long Conversations

If you often work in a single thread, try this:

  • Summarize or archive long sessions instead of keeping them open.
  • Start fresh after ~100 exchanges or when you notice a slowdown.
  • Copy your last useful prompt into a new chat — this keeps context without reloading the entire history.

5. Log Out and Back In

A quick logout/login cycle forces the app to re-establish a fresh WebSocket connection.
It’s a simple fix that often restores full response speed immediately.

6. Last Resort — Switch Models or Use the API

If the web interface feels slow, try:

  • Switching from GPT-4-Turbo to GPT-3.5 for lightweight prompts.
  • Using the OpenAI API via a tool like chat.openai.com/api — it often performs faster and more consistently for repetitive tasks.

Key Takeaway on slow ChatGPT

Most ChatGPT slowdowns are temporary and session-based, not permanent account issues.
Resetting your chat, clearing the browser cache, or checking for server congestion usually resolves the issue.

If it happens regularly, consider working through shorter sessions, using lighter models for routine tasks, and keeping an eye on OpenAI’s status page for live updates.

Best Practices for Formulating Prompts and Queries

Creating effective prompts and queries is essential for optimizing your experience with ChatGPT. A well-structured prompt not only facilitates a smoother interaction but also enhances the quality of information provided. The first step in formulating prompts is to ensure clarity. Ambiguity can lead to varied interpretations, so it is crucial to express your question or request in a straightforward manner. For example, instead of asking, “Tell me about the moon,” which might yield a broad response, try specifying, “What are the physical characteristics of the moon?” This targeted approach will guide the ChatGPT model towards a more informative and relevant answer.

Beyond clarity, brevity is equally important. Long-winded queries with excessive detail can obscure the main question you aim to address. Keep your prompts concise yet informative. For instance, rather than saying, “Can you provide me with an extensive list of the benefits and uses of green tea in human health and wellness?” consider simplifying it to, “What are the health benefits of green tea?” This adjustment invites ChatGPT to deliver a focused response.

Additionally, encourage relevant responses by using explicit language. Phrases like “give me a summary” or “list the key points” can help shape the output you expect. Avoid vague wording that might confuse the model. Furthermore, steer clear of leading questions that might bias the output. Instead of asking, “Why is ChatGPT better than other AI models?” you might pose, “What are the unique features of ChatGPT compared to other AI models?” This will result in a more balanced overview.

Incorporating these best practices—clarity, brevity, explicit language, and neutrality—can significantly improve your interactions with ChatGPT, allowing you to obtain accurate, relevant, and useful information.

Sharing and Utilizing Useful Prompts with the Community

Sharing effective prompts is a crucial aspect of utilizing ChatGPT to its fullest potential. By collaborating within the ChatGPT user community, individuals can enhance their experience and discover new ways to leverage this powerful tool. Engaging with fellow users not only fosters creativity but also leads to the development of more refined and effective prompts.

Several platforms exist where users can share their prompts and ideas. These include social media groups, dedicated forums, and community websites specifically designed for ChatGPT enthusiasts. On these platforms, users can post their successful prompts, seek feedback, and even request assistance in refining their queries.
